He was the first person to declare himself an\u00a0anarchist<\/a><\/i>,<\/sup><\/sup>\u00a0using that term and is widely regarded as one of anarchism’s most influential theorists. Proudhon is considered by many to be the “father of anarchism”.<\/sup>\u00a0Proudhon became a member of the\u00a0French Parliament<\/a>\u00a0after the\u00a0Revolution of 1848<\/a>, whereafter he referred to himself as a\u00a0federalist<\/a><\/i>.[12]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Proudhon described the\u00a0liberty<\/a>\u00a0he pursued as “the synthesis of\u00a0communism<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0property<\/a>“.<\/sup>\u00a0Some consider his mutualism to be part of\u00a0individualist anarchism<\/a><\/sup><\/sup><\/sup>\u00a0while others regard it to be part of\u00a0social anarchism<\/a>.<\/sup><\/sup><\/p>\n

Proudhon, who was born in\u00a0Besan\u00e7on<\/a>, was a printer who taught himself\u00a0Latin<\/a>\u00a0in order to better print books in the language. His best-known assertion is that “property is theft!<\/a>“, contained in his first major work,\u00a0What Is Property? Or, an Inquiry into the Principle of Right and Government<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(Qu’est-ce que la propri\u00e9t\u00e9? Recherche sur le principe du droit et du gouvernement<\/i>), published in 1840. The book’s publication attracted the attention of the French authorities. It also attracted the scrutiny of\u00a0Karl Marx<\/a>, who started a correspondence with its author. The two influenced each other and they met in Paris while Marx was exiled there. Their friendship finally ended when Marx responded to Proudhon’s\u00a0The System of Economic Contradictions, or The Philosophy of Poverty<\/i>\u00a0with the provocatively titled\u00a0The Poverty of Philosophy<\/a><\/i>. The dispute became one of the sources of the split between the anarchist and\u00a0Marxist<\/a>\u00a0wings of the\u00a0International Working Men’s Association<\/a>. Some such as\u00a0Edmund Wilson<\/a>\u00a0have contended that Marx’s attack on Proudhon had its origin in the latter’s defense of\u00a0Karl Gr\u00fcn<\/a>, whom Marx bitterly disliked, but who had been preparing translations of Proudhon’s work.<\/sup><\/p>\n

Proudhon favored\u00a0workers’ council<\/a>\u00a0and associations or\u00a0cooperatives<\/a>\u00a0as well as individual worker\/peasant possession over private ownership or the\u00a0nationalization<\/a>\u00a0of land and workplaces. He considered\u00a0social revolution<\/a>\u00a0to be achievable in a peaceful manner. In\u00a0The Confessions of a Revolutionary<\/i>, Proudhon asserted that “Anarchy is Order Without Power”, the phrase which much later inspired in the view of some the anarchist\u00a0circled-A<\/a> symbol, today “one of the most common graffiti on the urban landscape”.\u00a0<\/sup>Proudhon unsuccessfully tried to create a\u00a0national bank<\/a>, to be funded by what became an abortive attempt at an\u00a0income tax<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0capitalists<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0shareholders<\/a>. Similar in some respects to a\u00a0credit union<\/a>, it would have given interest-free\u00a0loans<\/a>.<\/sup>\u00a0After the death of his follower\u00a0Mikhail Bakunin<\/a>, Proudhon’s\u00a0libertarian socialism<\/a>\u00a0diverged into\u00a0individualist anarchism<\/a>,\u00a0collectivist anarchism<\/a>,\u00a0anarcho-communism<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0anarcho-syndicalism<\/a>, with notable proponents such as\u00a0Carlo Cafiero<\/a>,\u00a0Joseph D\u00e9jacque<\/a>,\u00a0Peter Kropotkin<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Benjamin Tucker<\/a>.
